Capnography: What you Need to Know

Capnography is used today for more than just end tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) monitoring for ventilated patients. ETCO2 monitoring is now used during conscious sedation, code blue events, as well as Procedural, Sedation and Analgesia events in Emergencies Departments. It is now being dubbed in some areas as the “other” vital sign and is also used by paramedics in prehospital care. Recent research is indicating that the use of ETCO2, is improving the survival rate during Cardiac Arrest (Melville, 2015). Respiratory Therapists, Registered Nurses, Physicians, Paramedics, and EMTs should all be proficient in the understanding and usage of ETCO2 monitoring. The dynamics of the relationship of improved ETCO2 reading as an indication of improved blood flow during CPR and a decrease in hypoxia during sedation will be included in this presentation.
