Gang Intervention Strategies in a Community Corrections Setting

There are several reasons that communities are concerned with individuals involved in gang activity. Arguably the most important reason is that gang members commit serious and violent crimes far more often than non-gang members. Identifying the risk factors for gang membership and implementing interventions to mitigate those risk factors is an essential role of the officer conducting community supervision of offenders. The main goal of this course is to explore the nature of gang membership and intervention strategies for offenders under supervision through the use of instructional material and experiential exercises. It will teach you to identify common risk factors that lead to gang membership and provides possible intervention tools that work to moderate those factors. Some methods for obtaining offender "buy-in" to a supervision plan including gang intervention are also discussed. This course is intended for corrections professionals working in the community, and it is based on "Understanding Gangs and Gang Processes" by Scott Decker, Ph.D.
