Abuse & Neglect

It is nearly impossible to estimate the exact prevalence of elder abuse in the United States. However, a report by the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA, 2007) showed that Adult Protective Services across 24 states confirmed almost 90,000 cases of elder abuse in 2004.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Experts believe that for every reported case of elder abuse, 5 more go unreported (NCEA, 1998). This then puts the potential cases of elder abuse at closer to half a million.

Many of these cases go unreported because older adults are fearful, embarrassed, isolated, dependent on the abuser, or incapable of reporting. Therefore, it's up to others, especially healthcare workers, to recognize and report situations that indicate abuse. In this course, you'll learn how to recognize, report, and prevent abuse.

Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, the content in this course is sourced from Appendix PP Guidance to Long Term Care Surveyors published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS (2017). While these regulations are specific to long-term care facilities, they do represent best practices that can be used for all care settings. However, each state has their own regulations pertaining to abuse, so it is important for to be familiar with your state's specific regulations as well. Additionally, always be sure to follow your organization's policies and procedures related to abuse.
